Advent Blog – Top 10 Best Books for Christmas

My 10 favourite books to read at Christmas,

in no particular order…The Night Before Christmas

The Night Before Christmas…

A Christmas tradition in our house. I read this to my kids before bed on Christmas Eve (as mentioned in a previous list)

A Christmas Carol by Chuck Dickens…

A Christmas CarolThe best story about Christmas ever.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle…

Have to have some Sherlock Holmes in here and nothing says Christmas like a goose being force-fed a rare jewel.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman…

Okay, not a Christmas story but it sure has a lot of snow in it and armoured bears and I love these books.

Lion the Witch and the WardrobeThe Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe…

So there’s this wardrobe and— ah you know.

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas…

Not the best Poirot story but it is set at Christmas.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas…

As any parent knows, when you have children you tend to have to read the same stories over and over and over and Dr Seuss is never a chore.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…

Have to have something by Roald Dahl in here so I’m picking this one even though it has nothing to do with Christmas.

Nackles by Curt Clark…

Okay, this is a strange one but I really love the Parker stories by Richard Stark and Richard Stark is Donald Westlake and Donald Westlake is Curt Clark. How many names does one guy need? I’d be surprised if more than ten people had ever heard of Nackles. It’s quite a dark little tale about an abusive husband and father – perfect Christmas fare – who invents the anti-Santa: Nackles. It’s just a short story written in 1964 but try and find it online. I always found the image of Nackles, very very tall and very very thin, travelling through Nackles Booktunnels underground being drawn along by eight dead-white goats, creepy as anything.

Lost Christmas by me…

I have to include it, don’t I?
